Itinerary update
(Edited 10/1)

Phila. to Monacan Indian Reservation Homecoming Bazaar, western VA.
Williamsburg, VA (overnight friend)
Staunton VA (overnight friend)
Charleston WV (whether this is overnight stop depends on anything interesting there)
Lexington KY (overnight either motel or friend)
Memphis, TN (overnight cousins)
Oklahoma City, OK (overnight motel)
Plano, TX (overnight friend)
Amarillo, TX (motel)
Albuquerque, NM (friend)

...I still have to finish. The southwest scares me a little - so big, so much to see, make decisions and pick a route. I may be strung out and sick of driving at that point, as may be the kids. I don't know.

Encouragement, plus suggestions and descriptions of travel conditions. Is it just hours and hours of nothing? Do I have to gas up at every opportunity? Will it be easy or difficult to get around there? To find stuff and see stuff? If I was alone, this would be easy, but I will have my children, and I am The Mom.

You'll be fine. I hear that civilization has reached as far south as DC (though I haven't seen proof) and perhaps as far west as Illinois.

She called me a little while ago to tell me she's skipping the OK leg and going straight to Plano. Er, going directly to Plano, that is. *grin*

So it's Plano, TX tonight, maybe a stay over an extra day depending. Then Amarillo, then Albuquoique, where she probably won't make a left toin at. Hmm. Going by Mapquest, if she drives straight through she can get from Albuquerque to Irvine in about 12 hours. Unless she's planning to take some side trips she hasn't mentioned, if she's impatient, she just might do it. On the other hand, with two young girls in the car, I kind of suspect she'll be making numerous minor stops and at least one major one. So figure a motel in Arizona or just over the border into CA.

Actually, we have at least one friend in Phoenix, I'm surprised she hasn't made that a stop. Or again, maybe she just hasn't told me.

That would split the 12 hour drive almost in twain, which makes sense to me.

She spent one extra night in Plano as expected. Last night they stayed at the Sleep Inn in Amarillo. (At least it wasn't the Dew Drop Inn. :) Apparently there was some sort of cowboy convention going on -- they were going to count cowboy hats until they got into the hotel lobby....

So they're headed on to Albuquerque, 4½ hours according to Mapquest. I asked about Phoenix, she said it was 'way out of the way, but I quoted some figures I got from Mapquest and she seemed thoughtful. We'll see.

Meantime she's staying away from LiveJournal, which is why I'm doing the updates here in an existing thread. I'm going to try to get her password so I can generate new posts instead.
