אהיה אשר אהיה One of my hobbies is reading Google Business News. It turned into train-wreck porn about a year ago. Right now I'm reading all I can find about Dubai World and how coincidentally, on a US Bank Holiday, they've dropped a 6 month hold request on all debt payments. Lots of investors the world over are left holding a very stinky and expensive bag, lots of international markets (the news implies) are dropping like rocks. To quote from the NY Times: No one could be certain how destabilizing a default by Dubai World would be — banks have not disclosed their exposure to Dubai World’s debt. But concern in global markets ran high. The dollar fell below 85 yen. The dollar also fell against the Swiss franc, a traditional safe haven, until the Swiss National Bank intervened in the market to bolster the American currency. What's going to happen to the US Stock Exchanges tomorrow? This might be fun to watch. Another fun angle - Fridays are my informal "How Many Banks with the FDIC close?" pool at work. No money involved, I just take guesses from whoever's in the break room when I drop in to check the news on-line. This whole flap with Dubai World has me wondering - what big US banks are sitting on Dubai World debt, and (for example, not based on reality) what if something like BoA does the big vomit of "deposits vs. assets" over a Dubai default? The FDIC insurance fund is already in the red. I really know very little - I read a lot, and mostly for entertainment value - a big market crash isn't going to make my skills worthless. That's the value of being a food worker. I'm not simply a service industry type, I actually know how to make stuff out of other stuff. That plus other household skills means we're in ok shape to make it through whatever happens over the next couple of years. Or longer. Today: Debbie or Jess (enlist Mariel's help as appropriate): Wash, peel bulbous root things, + 1 carrot. Grate with food processor. Combine with 1 large or 2 small diced onions, celery-like greens from the one bulbous root (celery root) chopped fine, however many cloves of garlic you like. Container together - this is for stuffing. Fridge. Mushrooms: Wash and quarter, zip loc baggie is fine, fridge. Use as needed for stuffing, salad, etc. Grate carrot, chop 3 hearts romaine (hearts in big bag) and about half the spinach. Spinach may need rinsing first. Green salad for fridge. Sliced cucumbers: These have been brined and (hopefully) drained. I will be vinegaring them for another salad.\ Eggs: we have 6 or 7 dozen in the fridge. Hard boil 2 dozen, fridge. Thursday: Turkey - TVP for stuffing is in large pickle jar, cabinet to left of sink. There's a bag of quinoa on the counter and a small jug in the cabinet to the right of the stove - bottom. Salad: Fluff as needed with more romaine and spinach. (I should be home to do this.) WTF am I working tomorrow. Maybe they'll send me home early. Bah. K, can you buy me a drink tonight? I'm thinking G St. because I'm going to have a lot of energy to blow off. Just a Strongbow, I'm in at 7:30 am tomorrow and I probably should sleep some tonight. http://www.thejewishweek.com/viewArticl A good article. Edit: by store Fruit Stand: apples fruit for Leif's Salad carrots celery onions root veggies (if they have what I want) sweet potatoes romaine - other lettuce? spinach unsweetened coconut? If not, Co-op bulk oranges lemons Grocery Outlet: ham? frozen berries tea bbq sauce? Costco: butter sour cream large heavy cream cream cheese? What's that quinoa they carry now? eggs SaveMart: ribs cranberries? Cranberry sauce? 2 more bottles bbq sauce Co-op coconut milk Spectrum shortening more quinoa (about 1.5 c left at home) root veggies cranberries (1.89 bag on sale) a couple basic basket day items - Are we calling T'giving a Basket Day too? I need to know this. Next "real" one isn't 'til Winter Solstice Couple bags sugar free candies couple bottles wine (I'd like one Arg. Tempranillo.) The cake layers are baked. Each recipe was one layer. It came out nice looking, fairly light for what it is, the method sort of works but I had to modify. Sweetener - 20 packets per layer baking soda - 2 tsp - one tbsp seems to alter the sweetener quality. use about 1 1/2 cups ground almonds. Almonds ground in the food processor until the texture of sticky fine cornmeal. I think while running they get further ground. I would blend two or three varieties of sweetener next time - they cancel out each others' weak points. Mariel's going out on her first "date" tomorrow afternoon. She and her classmate/friend (she calls him her boyfriend, and who am I to argue?) Max are going out to the movies. "Where the Wild Things Are." Eeek. http://www.reuters.com/article/oddlyEno LIMA (Reuters) - Peruvian police said on Thursday they had broken up a gang that allegedly killed dozens of people and sold their fat to buyers who used it to make cosmetics. http://www.steviva.com/resources/2006/0 (she wants vanilla icing on the cake.) Carbohydrates per Serving (0ne Slice) : 8.24 - Carbohydrates per Serving minus Fiber: 4.01 Twelve Caesars guests hurt in escalator mishap I guess it happened at the entrance to the Suetonius Nightclub. The nice lawn and garden clerk at Ace directed me to a lawn mower repair and sales shop down Olive Drive (the "business/industrial/ghetto-like" neighborhood of Davis. Yes, Davis has one, it's just very tiny and not terribly dangerous.) The Lawn Mower Repair Guy answered my questions, told me to not bother buying a carb rebuild kit until I'd actually looked inside. Then, without mockery or impatience, he scoped out a model similar to the one I'm using and showed me what and where the carburetor was. He explained what to look for when taking it apart, and how to tell the difference between "clean," "rebuild" and "replace." Given the rotted and fouled condition of the spark plug and air filter, I was expecting a tiny cup full of green, greasy pudding. What I found was pristine and shiny, with nothing impeding the flow of gasoline. I also found that an opened working carburetor drools gasoline unless you've drained the tank first. I put it back together and it still wouldn't start. I stomped off, because I was stuck. The next morning, most of what I'd read about how carbs work fit together in a nice clean picture. In that picture I saw, and realized, something was blocking the air flow between the air filter and the carb. This morning after the interminable feeding of little kids their First, Second and Third breakfasts (one forgets how little kids who are growing eat - and eat - and eat) I got the thin bottle brush and ran out. Popped off the air filter, whisked it through the intake. Reached my finger in, poked around, looked through and it looked clean enough. I primed the engine, pulled, it started on the first pull... ran for a few seconds and died. Primed it again. It ran, started to die, coughed out this huge (for a little mower) cloud of blue-grey smoke, and it's been running like a champ ever since. Starts on the first pull every time. Hey. I can now maintain and fix a little mower. I had no clue about any of this. I learned. And can do it now. So see? This week hasn't been pure chaos. Somehow in my own little slice of the universe, I imposed a bit of order. Sweeeet. |
